My Make-Up Collection (aka Why I shouldn’t buy anymore in 2011)

I’ve been meaning to photograph my make-up collection for a while now. Partly because I wanted to share the pictures on this blog, but mainly for personal reasons. I feel like I own TOO much make-up, and photographing it helps me see what I own too much of – and what I still have room to buy.

My whole collection: Purple box – unopened make-up; Pink Caboodle – daily make-up; Pink Ikea box – make-up I don’t use, but am not ready to throw away yet. The pictures below feature ALL the make-up in these boxes – not just the make-up I currently use.

Inside my caboodle: I like having all of my current make-up in one place. The caboodle is portable (so I can do my MU in any room) and easy to stow away – important features when you have young children!

FACE:
Foundation/Base: I mainly use my Everyday Minerals base (bottom left) or Dermablend liquid foundation (top center). I still haven’t found my HG product – so I’m ok with buying/trying new items in this category.

Bronzer and Highlighters: I love highlighters – but I definitely own enough for now. My most used item is my Sephora shimmer brick (top left) – once I finish that, I can get more use out of my Dior Amber Diamond highlighter (bottom left).

Blush: I like corals, pinks and berries – and I have a sufficient selection of these colours.

Finishing powder/blotting paper:

EYES:
Shadows & gel liner: I know what I like – natural looking eyes with a hint of shimmer. I definitely have enough shadow to last me a while.

Liners: I exclusively use gel liners now – so the only products I use from here are my Benefit Eye Bright and Gilded pencils (the chunky ones). Still, pencil products can last a long time and don’t take up much space, so I’m keeping these around in case I want to do a colourful eye (it does happen – maybe once or twice a year, with the right outfit!)

Mascara: I think I have the right amount of mascara – one waterproof one for humid days, and 3 others to experiment and layer with. I’ve only ever used drugstore mascara – so I bought the Dior Mascara Duo to see if it is worth the hype. But I’ll only open it once I use up some of my current stash.

LIPS:
Liners and pencils: I mainly use only 1 of these liners (the darkest brown – sixth from the left). I do need a berry coloured liner to go with my favourite Barry M lipstick, but I’m making do for now.

Lipstick: I only like 5 of these lipsticks (the 3 Barry M ones on the left, and MAC Creme d’Nude and Angel).

Glosses: I have a lot – but it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. Still, I want to use up what I have before buying any more.

Looking through my stuff – it’s safe to say that I have enough of EVERYTHING to last me this year. So I’m officially banning myself from buying any more make-up in 2011. The only 3 things that I’m allowed to buy are: foundation, a berry lip liner and Chanel nail polish.

Since I have multiples/samples of a lot of products, I’ve made myself a small emergency bag, just in case I have to go somewhere in a hurry. I was inspired by this post by BUBBLEGARM. My Emergency kit is the green bag, while the Hello Kitty one stays in my purse.

And although I have TOO much make-up, here’s some make-up that I was given recently – and that I’m very grateful for.
Holiday set from The Body Shop: I won this on Listen to Lena – I’m most excited about the black glitter nail polish.

Barry M samples: I received these to review after posting about the Get Barry M into Canada facebook page (totally unexpected but SO appreciated!). I was hoping to buy the Rose lipstick on my last day in England (no Barry M at the Heathrow Boots – sob!) so I was ecstatic to receive this. I’m also excited to try the purple nail polish (a dupe for Chanel’s Paradoxal).

So that’s ALL my make-up! Do you think I have too much? Is there any product that I need to get? (Maybe primer!) Do you have a lot of make-up?

i have a lot compared to people who don't use a lot of makeup but i definitely have less than other beauty bloggers. my philosophy is, if you're using them all as regularly as you can, then you don't have too much ;).

Ella, I understand, I have tons of makeup as well. I get what you mean about not having a HG product so you continue to buy and try haha. If you are looking for a good primer some great ones are Smashbox Photo Finish, Tarte Clean Slate and Hourglass Veil (my favorite but a bit pricey) I know I need to control my makeup spending especially since things like mascara need to be tossed every 3 months and lipgloss every year (which I am guilty of not doing as I have enough lipgloss to circle the world haha) Diorshow is really good, I use highend mascara because the drugstore ones I liked irritated my eyes, my favorite is YSL Faux Cils since it curls my lashes and gives length and volume its amazing I just wish it were cheaper haha.

I'm currently on a No-Buy too! But I feel guilty because I have triple of what you own…I have far too many glosses, concealers and foundations. Today I'm going to take back MAC glosses for BACtoMAC owhich they're too old for me to attempt to apply. Plus, I'm on a lipstick love now vs lipgloss.

Thanks for sharing your stash! You're so organized, I love that. Uh-yes. I have a lot of make-up, haha. But I hardly ever wear lipstick, can you believe that? lol. I think I have like 6 total. My new favorite HG mascara is Peter Thomas Roth. Omg, it's unbelievable. It blows Dior away. He also has a growth serum and the mascara contains a bit of it so my lashes look longer as a result, even without mascara. I love it.

Dani – too true – I think it's ok to have lots of MU if you get good use out of it…but since I stick to basic looks, I have no excuse for buying loads of similar neutrals.Jennifer – I'm usually so happy with drugstore mascara (currently loving Maybelline FALSIES mascara) – but I'm hoping that high end mascara will be even more amazing! I've always read good things about YSL faux cils. Thanks for the primer recommendations – I have a sample of the Smashbox one. I'm just worried that the silicones will aggrevate my skin- will have to read up on that.Monica – yay – another person not buying make-up – there are quite a few bloggers doing the same – it helps to have us all in the same boat LOL! I'm loving lipstick now too – but I always wear gloss on top – don't like how it looks on me straight out of the tube.Andi – I'd love to see your MU – you choose such amazing items. I've never even heard of the Roth mascara – will have to look out for it!Miss*Kimmy – I had the Dior highlighter on my wishlist for so long – but surprisingly – I think that my Sephora shimmer brick is as good, if not better. Of course – the Dior packaging is much cuter LOL!

I think I may have more make up than you but I have more issues with throwing it away, lol. Though I tend to stick to similar colors in bases, blushes, and lips, I love to play with colors when it comes to eyes. And of course I feel like I have to have different finishes for different make ups (shimmeries, mattes, glowing, etc…) I tend to find a fave for a month or two and then I'll switch things up. As for buying, I buy new foundations, powders, and mascara as needed. Though I don't buy blushes and glosses often, I do like to switch them up about every six months (I'll usually buy a few at a time to see which I like best). Eye make up is my down fall. If I see a set of colors that jump out at me, I'll grab them up. And I love colored liners and mascaras. Hee hee, make up is just too fun!

I'm the same – wanting a lot of finishes for the same products (cream, powder, liquid etc). Blushes and glosses are my major downfall – I'm not really into using coloured liners, although I own a few.

Honestly, your collection seems like just the right size to me. I think if you can photograph it all easily, that's a good amount 😉 Although who am I to talk? I have sooo much makeup, the thought of dragging it all out and photographing it scares me (haha!)xo, alison-elle.com

Thanks Alison! I love looking through other people's makeup collections – especially when they have a seperate vanity area…but when it comes to my stuff – I wish everything would fit into my caboodle instead of 3 boxes LOL!
