Question of the month from Skylette: “What is blogging etiquette to you? For example, do you comment on
everyone’s blog that comments on yours? Do you follow everyone with a
blog that reaches out to you?”
I LOVE this question but there’s so much to say! I wish we could ALL meet up for one big coffee date and discuss this over cappuccinos!
- As I wrote above my comment box: “Thanks for commenting! Comments are my favorite part of blogging and I respond to each and every one “ I love interacting with my readers and hearing their thoughts on my post – if you’ve taken the time to comment: I’m definitely writing back!
- I reply under each comment so my readers can see it if they check back – this also helps other readers who may have wanted to know the answer to the same question.
- I wish BLOGGER integrated a commenting system like DISQUS so that you could easily see when your comment receives a reply. When I comment on somebody else’s blog, I usually check back in a day or 2 (if I remember) to see if I’ve received a response – but this is not efficient!
- In terms of commenting on other blogs – I only comment if I have something meaningful to say. I’m also more likely to comment on a blog when I know I’ll receive a response.
- However, I don’t judge other bloggers who don’t reply back – I know a lot of them send emails to their readers…and in a lot of cases, they may receive SO many comments that its impossible to respond to all of them – I’m just grateful they are writing posts! I get so sad when some of my favorite bloggers feel under pressure and then want to quit blogging altogether!
- For me, responding to comments is FUN – thanks to you guys for being so amazing & interesting! I especially want to send LOVE out to my regular commenters (you know who you are!) – you guys make my blogging experience so rewarding & worthwhile!
Since I don’t have any etiquette-themed photos to share, I thought I’d include some recent OOTDs instead!

Such a great point, Ella- you're right, it is helpful for readers to see your response in the comments section. I prefer to personally email the reader a response but there are pros and cons. I really wish you could get an email notification when someone replied to your comment; that would be great!
Yup – the comment section can be so helpful to read – I often end up getting a lot of great tips from reading the comments of other blogs (especially on beauty posts!).
Amen… blogger blogger needs to adapt a commenting platform like Disqus already! It would be easier to see replies from the blog author. I have always loved reading your blog and think you are one of the sweetest bloggers I know. I just love ya'!
Awwww – the feelings is completely mutual!!! Love ya too!
I feel the same way about liking commenting on blogs where I get a reply – although no reply doesn't bother me or deter me! It also depends (as a blog commenter AND poster) what the comment was – like if there was a question for example, responses are appreciated! I'm also just happy to read a blog I like no matter what, but it's fun to interact. http://theworldfrommystilettos.blogspot.ca
Exactly – as a blog reader – the most important part for me are the actual posts. Comment responses are a bonus – but once blogs get REALLY popular and get a MASSIVE amount of comments, I could see how it could get overwhelming for that blogger to keep up with…so I'd rather they focus on posts than worry about keeping up with comments. For me personally though, the comments are my favorite part so I'm always going to try my best to keep up with them 🙂
The email notification when you get a response would be amazing. Hopefully they'll get with the program soon :)Loving both of your polished looks here!
Thanks Lilly! Yes – an email notification would be perfect. I love how Disqus notifies you when your comment has received a response – and has a link to it. So quick & convenient.
what a great post. I respond to comments within 2 days which is as quick as I can (with a young baby at home). I also only comment when I have something meaningful to say and also mostly on blogs I know I will get a response (like yours). I love how you always mix high and low. Oh btw, I went to Garage as per ur recs to size up for their skinny jeans (I normally wear size 6 or 8) but they still don't fit me as well. I need to still hunt for affordable skinny jeans that sit higher.
Thanks lovely – it's funny how I will pay up for a bag but hardly ever do for shirts & jeans LOL! I think responding within 2 days is great! For me, I usually approve comments on my phone but wait until I'm at my laptop to respond (I HATE typing on my iPhone LOL!)For affordable skinny jean recs – I'd try Walmart (a Canadian blogger I follow recently got the CUTEST pair of camo jeans there – I'm totally checking it out – and they have a great range of sizes too)…also people find the CUTEST jeans at F21, but I haven't tried any on from there yet…American Eagle Outfitters are bit pricier but are great quality and they have frequent store-wide discounts.
I agree! while I'm not able to respond to comments as much as I'd like, I do the best I can! I've always wondered why blogger can't come up with something like disquss, I mean- how great would that be??PS- Loving your mini tanner, adorable!LindsayLindsayJEveryday.blogspot.com
I really hope they integrate a Disqus-like system. I like when they incorporated this indented reply system so hopefully they will keep upgrading it!
I like to reply to the comment via email (if the commenter has set up their email so it's not a no-reply email), and I TRY to copy paste the body of that email to the original comment so others can see I did actually reply- but I often forget. I wish that there was a function that could do both at the same time. Not familiar with disqus but sounds like it could be the answer!
Disqus is amazing – it notifies you when your comment receives a response – and links right back to the relevant post – such a time saver!I think you're great at keeping up with comments on your blog – my questions have always been responded to <3
I kinda get miffed when bloggers dont respond to everyone; especially if it appears that they only respond to certain people…However I do understand that people are people and life does get busy…As a somewhat newbie to blogging I make sure I respond to everyone and if I was ever in a way that I couldnt I would definitely let my bloggy friends know…I believe the things you mentioned are aspects of common courtesy….I love my bloggy friends but I admit that sometimes I dont comment because I know that the wont say anything…I have also unfollowed bloggers that were "too busy" to respond or had their picks when they did…This is a great post and very well said…;)
Thanks for your comment 🙂 I get what you mean – it could seem kind of unfair when only certain people get their comments responded to. I've noticed one of the HUGE bloggers I follow responds to the first 10 people who comment – that seems fair & shows that she still makes an effort to connect with her readers 🙂
First of all: Ella, I just love your blog. I've been following it for a while. It helped me get through a difficult time last year by giving me some inspiration to look and feel good about myself. And I have never actually commented here before. So I thought I'd break that habit today 🙂
Thank you so much for commenting! I'm SO touched that my blog helped you through a difficult time. I'm always looking for inspiration to be the best possible version of myself (in many ways – not just with beauty & fashion LOL – though that is mostly what I end up sharing here!) – and I'm so glad that what I've posted appealed to you too. Hope your difficult time has gotten easier to deal with!
Hi – I'm new to your blog and absolutely love it. I spent a good chunk of time going back and reading through your archives. Love it. I think we have a lot in common :-)Michelle
Hi Michelle! Thanks for commenting – it's always lovely to meet other Canadian bloggers. I'm glad we have a lot in common – I love your blog! Your post on blog face was too funny – I have not yet mastered the art of the selfie so I'm going to have to take some tips from you lol!
Your blog is the only blog I read regularly but I love that you respond to every post.As for your your blog being about beauty and fashion, I think your inner beauty shines through!! I know from personal experience what a wonderful casting person you are but your writing is an inspiration and your responses show that you care about your readers. Love and miss you bunches!!!!
You always have been and will always be a sweetie Lindy 🙂 I'm so glad you read my blog – we hardly ever get the chance to chat these days but I always feel like there's so much I want to tell you!
I love this post. How true! I just wish my friends and family would comment more. xo Johttp://www.whiterosesandcoffee.com/
Glad you liked the post Jo – I know what you mean about wishing for more comments – it makes writing so much more worthwhile when we get feedback through comments, right?
