Cheap & Trendy temptations….

Three current clothing trends are: anything peplum, colored denim and burgundy, burgundy, burgundy!

I was recently tempted into purchasing some cheap & trendy items at H&M and Old Navy. They were only $19 each, so I thought I’d see if I could fit these trends into my current wardrobe.

Colored Denim:

Old Navy Rockstar Jeans (blue & red) & Cords (peach) – bought during the $19 sale

The rockstar jeans were not a success – they don’t suit my figure at all (drumstick legs – yuck!) – Garage skinny
jeans are much more flattering on me (they are made of thicker material and suck me where I
need it!). The rockstar cords fit well (and are nice and warm)
BUT I don’t really see myself wearing peach bottoms – especially in the
winter months! I changed them for these brown ones – boring & safe,
but much easier to pair with tan boots and cream sweaters.

Peplum tops in Burgundy & Black:

H&M peplum tops – $19.95

I liked the neckline and sleeves of the peplum tops – but the pleating above the stomach was strange and puffy – especially when viewed from the side. And I’m not sure I’m comfortable with the peplum silhouette on my figure. Even though these tops were a bargain at $19 each – they are not a good deal if I never wear them!

Navy Lace Dress:

H&M Navy Lace Dress: $34.95

I did find one keeper – although it is not a “trendy” item – I LOVE this navy lace tunic. I’m still trying to figure out how I will wear it – it’s too short to wear as a dress, so I may pair it with dark skinny jeans or black leggings & black ballet flats.

Some outfits from this week:

JoeFresh necklace, Jacob top, Garage jeans, Old Navy boots (mine are the 2011 version) & Balenciaga bag

Was in such a rush that morning – I didn’t have much time to do my hair so I twisted it up into a top knot using my trusty spin pins.

Old Navy Heart Sweater & Gingham Shirt, Garage jeans, Old Navy boots (mine are the 2011 version)

This orange shirt & heart sweater pairing was inspired by this outfit on pinterest (she must love shopping at Old Navy as much as I do!) – love her orange chambray shirt & the leopard accents she used.

Have you added any peplum items or colored denim to your wardrobe? Are you ever tempted to purchase trendy items just because they’re cheap?

i hate old navy sizing. i swear i can try on everything single pair of one size and they would all fit differently. it's such a bummer bc they're rock star jeans come in so many colors!

I TOTALLY agree with you – Old Navy jeans-sizing is strange as it is BETWEEN styles (i.e. flirt vs sweetheart) but would you believe the rockstar jeans have the strangest sizing of all? The sizing varies between colors! For example – the blue pair I bought gape open near the zippers – whereas the red ones fit just fine!!! Even the cashier at Old Navy was going on about how the rockstar jeans have really weird sizing. However – the rockstar cords I've tried have all fit the same way (and they're super-comfy too!)- would recommend them for sure!

I had to go up two sizes when I tried on the rockstar skinnies and they make me look like I have sausage legs, lol. I prefer a skinny that is less jegging and more slim through the highs and thighs and straighter through the calf. Once you start squeezing the calf, I look as though I was stuffed in with a shoe horn.I love the look of the burgundy peplum top on you. I understand not being comfortable with the look of something though.

Most of the rockstar jeans are quite unflattering – which is a shame – maybe that's why they're on super-sale at the moment?

Ugh, isn't Old Navy sizing such a pain. I hardly ever can take advantage of any online sale promos because I have to try everything on :-/ I like the ones you picked up though!

Thanks Maria! I usually end up ordering a couple of sizes and returning what I don't need in store (I buy online since the store selection is smaller)…it is a pain though!

I love the heart sweater and the navy lace dress. I really gtta check Old Navy soon. The red cords are also gorgeous.I love peplum on other ppl but not on myself. I think it's best if someone wants to add curves (hips/boobs). I'm already well gifted in those areas and peplum makes it look like TOO much!

I think that may be why I don't like peplums on me – I don't want to add anything to my hips LOL!

Old Navy sizing is definitely odd! I had to size way up in the rockstar jeans. I also only have the traditional blue denim pair, and I've read reviews stating that the colored denim is even smaller then the regular denim. I don't know why this is though. I have yet to find any colored denim I like on my pear shaped body! You look beautiful Ella, so happy to see you doing outfit pictures!

Thanks Noelle – glad you like the outfit pictures – it's a bit easier now because we finally put a full-length mirror up in the guest room 🙂

I hear you on crazy ON sizing – I rarely buy denim/bottoms there because they fit me so weird. Our store is really small now too – they closed off what used to be the kids section and now everything is crammed into half the store so we never get a ton of items, and the few that we do sell out fast. Take, for example, the darling polka dot j crew sweater look alike – I swear we only had one size run in each color!

I definitely prefer shopping online and returning in store (since shipping is free)…I don't have to waste time trying clothes on in store!

I never wear ON bottoms because of their weird sizing in pants. I tried on their colored denim and had to size up & they still looked dreadful on me. Love the burgundy peplum top on you, but if you feel uncomfortable in it you will probably never really wear it (at least I never do).LindsayJEveryday.blogspot.com

Lindsay – too true – I've learned by now that if I have doubts while trying it on – it's definitely not worth keeping – otherwise it will just hang in my closet with the tags on LOL!
