How to Create an Ombre Lip

A wall of roses – platters of pretty pastel macarons – how could I NOT love the #LipsAndScents event? I recently attended the #SDMBeautyGala to learn how to achieve the perfect ombre lip from a Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutique expert .

Truth be told, I was a bit nervous about trying an Ombre Lip – I had visions of 90s-style brown lipliner ringed around a nude lipstick. I was relieved to learn that the modern Ombre Lip was NOTHING like 90s lips. My appointment started with Lysa (the Beauty Boutique Expert) asking me what shade of lipcolour I wanted to try. Since it was Valentine’s Day – of course my answer was: ROSY pink!

Lysa began by moisturizing my lips with a lipbalm. She then applied Lise Watier Lip Primer as a base, to ensure my lipcolour stayed in place. Since I have naturally dark lips, she applied some concealer so that the lighter pink lipcolours would show up on my lip. She then took a Clarins Lip Pencil (in Azalea) and started lining my lips.

She first focused on perfecting my lip shape, and then used the liner to shade around the border of my lips – leaving a graduated lip colour. To fill in the rest of my lips, she applied two Clarins Natural Lip Perfectors (in 07 & 08) – the darker shade around the edges of my lip, and the lighter shade near the center. She finished off with a dab of super shiny Dior gloss (Dior Addict 363) to add dimension to my lips.

I absolutely loved my finished look – here’s a close-up. You can see that the ombre is very subtle and gives the impression of fuller looking lips. I learned a lot of new tips from my consultation:

  • Lip primers exist – and they really work! Glossy lips never last that long on me, but this helped my color last for hours.
  • Using a concealer to cancel out my natural lipcolour helps lighter lipsticks/glosses stand out on my lips
  • There are different ways of wearing an ombre lip – you could play with different lip colours for a more dramatic lip (as seen here) or you can work with various shades and textures for a more subtle 3D effect (as seen on my lips)!

I loved my results and wanted to recreate this look at home, so I purchased the Lise Watier Lip Primer and Lip Pencil in Rose Parfait. (the Clarins Lip Pencil was out of stock but this Lise Watier one is the same shade). Because I attend the Lips and Scents event – I received a goody bag with my purchase. It included a trio of rose chocolates (demolished by my family before I could take pics – sorry!), a pretty fuchsia makeup pouch, an adorable Lip Fusion lipstick mini, and a copy of the most recent GLOW magazine.

Before I left the Beauty Boutique, I checked out the two most popular Valentine’s Day perfumes: Roses de Chloe and Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy Rose. I knew I’d love Roses de Chloe because I adore the original Chloe scent, but I was surprised at how much I loved Viva La Juicy Rose. It’s not as strongly sweet as other Juicy Couture perfumes – but it’s just as long-lasting and has the prettiest floral scent. Also – I’ll admit it – I’m obsessed with the pink and gold Juicy Rose glitter bottle – it’s just so sparkly and pretty!

Gorgeous pictures! I'm a huge rose fanatic so this all calls to me! I have that roses de Chloe perfume and it's such a feminine, lovely scent. I wear it year round. As for the ombré lips, I like the results! It looks much more natural than what I pictured it would be.

Of course we'd BOTH be rose fanatics…it's just part of our twin-dom 😉 And yes – I was so happy (and relieved) with my subtle version of the Ombre lip!
