Comparing the Different Sizes of the Gucci GG Marmont Matelasse Shoulder Bag

Do you remember the Gucci Wallet on a Chain that I raved about last year? You might be surprised to hear that I sold it. And the reason is not because I DON’T love Gucci GG Marmont Matelasse bags…it’s because I love them TOO much!

I realized that owning my bag (the wallet on a chain version) was too limiting. I didn’t want to only wear it as a clutch to special events – I wanted to carry it more frequently. So I sold it through Instagram to a local acquaintance – and went on to purchase my true dream bag – the Gucci Mini GG Marmont Chain Shoulder Bag pictured above.

Here’s a quick comparison shot I took before selling my Wallet on a Chain. As you can see – the dimensions look very similar. However, due to the narrow width and structured design, the Wallet on a Chain held SO much less than my new bag. The final straw for me was when I was at an event and had to put my lipgloss in my friend’s bag – as it wouldn’t fit in mine, even though I was only carrying my essentials! That’s when I knew the Wallet on a Chain wasn’t practical for my needs.

Aside from the size, I also prefer the look of the shoulder bag. I initially chose the Wallet on a Chain bag because its structured composition means that it will hold its shape for longer – but there is something so unique and more charming about the design of the Chain Shoulder bag.

When it came to picking out my new bag – I was lucky because I got to preview the different sizes on my friends – Mandy owns the Small Shoulder Bag, and Eleni owns the Medium. In comparison to Chanel, I think the Medium Gucci Marmont Bag is similar to the Chanel Jumbo Flap, and the Small Gucci Marmont Bag is comparable to the Chanel Classic Flap in M/L.

Here is a list I put together showing the bag dimensions for each size of the Gucci GG Marmont Matelasse Shoulder Bag.

One thing to watch out for when shopping, is the variablity in naming across retailers. I’ve seen the Super Mini Bag listed as a Mini Bag in a few stores – if someone was ordering online, they could end up very disappointed, as the Super Mini is tiny! So if you plan on ordering online, always make sure to double check the dimensions.

There’s also some confusion regarding the colour of my bag – it’s a rosy nude and is my absolute favourite! On the Gucci website, it’s listed as DUSTY PINK but I’ve also seen it called PORCELAIN ROSE, TAUPE and BEIGE.

I’m glad I switched from the Wallet on a Chain to the Mini Shoulder Bag, as it’s so much more useful to me now. I try to invest wisely in my designer bags and avoid repetition – and since I already own a nude Chanel Wallet on a Chain, the Shoulder Bag is a much better choice. I’m thinking of writing a post sharing an overview of my designer handbag collection – let me know if you’d be interested in reading it!

Gorgeous! I think you made the right decision. I’m finding that shoulder bags are my favorite so I’m not buying anything else (unless my mind changes!) As much as I love the idea of smaller bags, they just aren’t practical for daily use!

Yes – for me – small is always SO cute, but at a point, it becomes impractical – so I have to pick something cute but spacious enough LOL!

Thanks for this informative post! I'm debating between the mini and the small… were you debating between them too?

Yes – I did – and my friend has the small so I was able to see it in person! What drew me to the mini over the small, is that I like how the bags look when they're stuffed full – and the mini was spacious enough to carry all my essentials, while the small was too big (I was choosing it as an evening bag – but if you're looking for a day bag, the small would probably be better!)

So happy I found your post! Thanks for sharing! I am thinking whether I should get a small or mini, because I also like to wear it all 3 ways, however I am only 158cm tall. What do you think of carrying it to work? Is it too much? And…the color, I am thinking light pink or dusty pink, I tried light pink on and it looks great and girlish. What do you think if I can only get one?I wear smart causal to work and tee & jeans on leisure.Thank you!

I think a small would be best for work, as you would have lots of space. Light pink with the gold hardware is gorgeous – it really does coordinate with everything, so I would pick that!

I’ve been searching all over for a blog post like this. I wanted to research online before going into the store and regret buying on impulse. This post has helped me guide my decision..I’m 5’7” in height and I’m going to go with the Small. Thanks so much!!

Hi! I purchased mine from SSense in October 2017. They had it listed as a “pink” mini (they list both the taupe and the baby pink shades as “pink” on their site). I know the mini in this colour is a little harder to find, although I’m not sure why!

Hi! I’m trying to decide between the small or mini bag in black. Thoughts? Will the mini hold a zipper wallet?

Hi. So I am 5’2 and I am debating between the small or mini. I’m afraid that the mini will be too small to fit my everyday essentials but I don’t want a bag that is too long on me.

So DUSTY PINK, PORCELAIN ROSE, TAUPE and BEIGE are all the same color? I’m trying to figure out what the difference is but if they’re all the same, just different depending on website then that is helpful!
